Ten sites produced a record total of 32 young in SE Michigan in 2012. Here is a summary from Chris Becher, MDNR Southeast Peregrine Falcon Nesting Coordinator and Barb Baldinger, MDNR volunteer and photographer. We gained four new nest sites for the 2013 season First National Bank Building Detroit, Parklane Tower East Dearborn, Office Building Saginaw, Campbell Ewald Building, Warren! We monitored sixteen active nest sites in my portion of the southeast region during the 2013 season. There were two inactive sites; The DTE River Rouge Power Plant and the DTE St. Clair Power Plant had no nesting activity. Six of the sixteen sites had complete nest failures. In 2012 three sites had complete nest failure. The Blue Water Bridge pair and the U-D Mercy pair made a second unsuccessful attempt at nesting this season. A big surprise this year was the Fisher/New Center Site. This pairs first attempt at nesting failed, but a second attempt produced one young. The exact location of this second successful attempt was not discovered. There are two additional sites in the Southeast District (Jackson and Lansing); these two sites are monitored by others. Last year thirteen active sites that we monitored produced 28 chicks. This year sixteen active sites produced 24 chicks. In the 2013 season six rescues (premature fledgings/grounded birds) were made. In 2012, eleven rescue attempts were made.
